Bush Kinder Program

Our Bush Kinder program, supported by a grant from the Department of Education, offers a unique and enriching outdoor learning experience tailored predominantly for four-year-old kindergarten children. Established with the support of the City of Whitehorse and guided by Whitehorse Council’s Parkside Education Program Officers, Bush Kinder is held at the beautiful Cootamundra Walk in Blackburn, providing children with a natural setting that fosters exploration, curiosity, and creativity.

Aligned with the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework, Bush Kinder sessions are designed to immerse children in nature. This innovative program encourages children to actively engage with their surroundings in a way that promotes holistic growth, fostering a deep connection to the environment and instilling values of sustainability and conservation. Through this approach, children not only gain physical health benefits, such as improved balance, strength, and coordination, but also experience enhanced focus, creativity, and social skills as they navigate natural challenges and play collaboratively with peers.

Current research highlights that children today spend more time indoors and in front of screens, often missing out on unstructured play in natural settings. Bush Kinder addresses this trend by providing children with valuable time outdoors, where they experience the joy and freedom of nature-based activities. This contributes to their overall well-being, supports positive identity development, and helps them form a lifelong appreciation for the environment.
